Description
27 and 28 Boutport Street are a pair of houses and shops dating from the early 18th century, with No. 28 having been refronted in the late 20th century. The buildings feature painted brick in Flemish bond on the front and back, except for the front of No. 28, which is made of exposed red brick. They have a slated roof with blue ridge tiles, while the rear roof slope of No. 27 has shaped asbestos slates. Each gable has a chimney, and there is an additional chimney on the rear roof slope, which is level with the party wall. The middle and right-hand chimneys are made of yellowish brown brick with projecting courses forming caps, while the left-hand chimney is red brick with a rebuilt top.
The buildings are three storeys tall and have a six-window range. The ground storey features shop fronts flanking a wide entrance that leads to Loverings Court at the rear. The shop front at No. 27 has been remodelled but retains late 19th-century flanking pilasters with large panelled blocks at the top supported by paired brackets. The upper storeys of No. 27, which has a two-window range, include windows with flat gauged arches and keystones, set in recessed box frames. The second storey has old sashes, with the upper ones having six panes, while the third storey sashes are plain with horns. No. 28 has segmental-headed windows with 20th-century six-paned sashes and a boxed eaves cornice.
The rear wall is mostly hidden by the buildings in Loverings Court, but the central portion has two blocked windows on each upper storey, with the second storey windows having segmental heads and the third storey windows having flat heads. There is a raised brick band at the second-floor level. On the ground storey, to the left of the archway from Boutport Street, there is a small rectangular projection with a slated pent roof, which appears to be a later addition made of painted red brick and built without external openings. The floor of the entrance to Loverings Court is paved with old granite setts, featuring large slabs for cart wheels to run on. A characteristic Barnstaple street sign in blue and white tiles inscribed "Loverings Court" is located in the left side wall. The interiors have not been inspected.
