Description

No. 113 on Boutport Street is a house, partly used as showrooms and offices, owned by the Barnstaple Bridge Trust. It dates from around the 1820s and features a plastered exterior with a slate roof that has gabled ends. The building has end stacks with rendered shafts and a rear left internal lateral stack also with a rendered shaft. The main structure has a double-depth plan, consisting of two rooms wide, with a staircase that rises at right angles from a central passage entrance. There are single-storey rear outshuts to the right and a two-storey service wing to the left at the back.

The house is three storeys tall and has an asymmetrical four-bay front, with the entrance located to the left of the centre. The entrance features a good Tuscan doorcase with a shallow open pediment and an outer doorway made up of six fielded panels beneath a fanlight with radial glazing bars. All windows and blind recesses are adorned with proud, stuccoed voussoirs. The windows are 12-pane hornless sashes, with blind recesses in the bay above the door. The rear elevation retains a round-headed stair window with radial glazing bars in the upper light and one 12-pane sash window on the second floor. The rear wing, which has two gable-ended roofs, contains a variety of windows, mostly from the 20th century, and concludes with a lean-to.

Inside, the building has been somewhat altered but still retains good plaster friezes, including a Greek key ceiling frieze. The staircase has been partly boxed in, but it may still be intact, and there is a possibility that some chimneypieces remain.
