Description
The Barnstaple Conservative Club, originally a house, dates from the early 19th century. It is built of painted brick with elaborate cement details and features a hipped slated roof. There are red brick chimneys on each side wall and on the rear wing to the right. The building has two storeys and a three-window range.
The central doorway is flanked by paired Ionic columns that support an entablature with a blocking course. The double doors consist of three panels each, with panelled reveals. On either side of the doorway are triple-sashed windows, which have keystones and voussoirs highlighted in cement; the lower sashes are plain, while the upper ones have six panes in the center and two panes on the sides.
At both ends of the ground storey, there are rusticated pilaster strips. The upper storey features three round-arched windows with panelled pilasters that support a moulded archivolt with a keystone. The six-paned sashes have the center window-head with two upright glazing bars, while the others include 20th-century ventilators. Between and flanking the windows are four panelled pilasters that stand on a plain bandcourse, rising to an entablature with a bracketed cornice. The interior has not been inspected.
