Description

122 and 123 Boutport Street is a house that has been divided into flats, shops, and offices, likely built in the 18th century. The building features painted Flemish-bond brick and a slate roof with gabled ends, while the stacks are not visible from the front. It has a courtyard plan arrangement, with the main range facing Boutport Street and a rear right wing at a right angle, along with a rear range that runs parallel to the front, consisting of two small service blocks.

The structure is two storeys high and showcases a decorative guilloche eaves cornice. The front has an asymmetrical five-window arrangement, with two shop fronts on the left and a doorway to an office located to the right of the centre. The office features a recessed panelled door with a flat porch hood and frieze. To the right on the ground floor, there are two 2-pane sash windows. The late 19th to early 20th-century shop fronts have pilasters with brackets flanking the fascias, canted 2-pane windows, and half-glazed shop doors. The first floor contains five 2-pane windows with segmental heads and keyblocks, one of which retains margin panes.

Inside, the building retains some interesting features, including a plaster cornice in the hallway of No. 123 and an original staircase that rises from the entrance passage. The buildings in the rear courtyard are notable examples of unaltered service buildings, which are rare in an urban setting.
