Description
May House is a former Baptist Minister's house located on Boutport Street, Barnstaple, and dates from 1870. It was designed by RD Gould. The walls appear to be of a soft stone, possibly refaced in cement, with limestone dressings and a granite plinth. The roof is slate, featuring crested ridge tiles, and a stone chimney is present on the left gable.
The house is three stories high, with a garret, and originally had a two-window front. A pointed arch doorway, springing from pilasters with richly carved capitals, is positioned to the right of the ground floor. This doorway is set within a slight projection, which extends upwards as a short buttress with a shaped top on its left end. A transomed window above the doorway on the second floor has a flat molded stone lintel, and is surmounted by a panel of patterned brickwork enclosed within a pointed, molded arch. A plain canted bay window is situated to the left of the ground and second floors; the ground-floor lights have shouldered heads, while those above have segmental heads. The third floor contains two windows with shouldered heads. A bracketed eaves cornice runs along the top. A hipped dormer window is centrally placed in the roof. The Baptist Chapel and Church Hall are adjacent to the west.
