Description
The Baptist Church Hall, built between 1869 and 1870 by R.D. Gould, serves as a church hall with schoolrooms above. The exterior walling resembles brick but is likely made of a soft stone, possibly refaced in cement, with limestone dressings and a granite plinth. The roof is slated and features crested ridge-tiles. The building is two lofty storeys high, equivalent to three storeys of the adjacent former minister's house, May House. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style.
The façade has a four-window range, with three larger windows on the right grouped under a gable. Both storeys feature windows with pointed stone arches and hoodmoulds; the second-storey windows are subdivided into two lights, each with pointed arches and a round light at the top. A group of small ventilator slits is located in the apex of the gable, topped with a carved stone finial. The left-hand bay slightly projects and contains a segmental-headed doorway with panelled double doors. Above this doorway is a half-window with a pointed arch, while the second-storey window has a trefoiled head set within a larger pointed arch with a hoodmould resting on mask-corbels. A small gable is positioned above this window. At the base of the left door-jamb, there is a carved inscription stating: 'This stone was laid by T Cave Esq. M.P. Sept. 8. 1869.'
The 1988 listing description notes that there are no features of special interest in the hall's interior, and the upper floor was not inspected. The Baptist Church and the former Minister's house, now known as May House, are located adjacent to the church hall on either side.
