Description
60 and 61 Mill Street is a house that has been subdivided and now includes shops. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and features a painted brick front in Flemish bond with slate roofs. There is a red-brick chimney on the right gable end. The building has a double-depth plan, two rooms wide, with a central entrance passage leading to a rear stair. It stands three storeys high and has a three-window range, with the middle window being narrower than the two outer ones. The central door has four moulded panels above and four flush panels below, arranged in the form of a St Andrews Cross.
To the right, there is a 19th-century shop front that has been largely rebuilt in the mid to late 20th century, but it retains an entablature that extends over the central door. The shop front to the left has been almost completely altered but still features a late 19th-century half-glazed shop door. The second-storey windows are segmental-headed with keystones. The two left-hand windows on each upper storey have barred sashes in moulded flush frames, with six over six panes on the second storey and three over six panes above. The right-hand windows have wooden casements, with three panes per casement on the second storey. There is a moulded board below the eaves.
Inside, there is an 18th-century wooden staircase with a narrow open well, slender turned balusters with square necking-pieces, and column-newels. The first-floor right-hand front room features an 18th-century door with two ovolo-moulded panels.
