Description

No. 9 Cooper Street is likely a former warehouse that has been converted into a shop with storerooms above. It dates from the late 17th century or earlier. The front is rendered, and the solid ground storey has been evidently rebuilt at an angle in the 20th century, while the upper storey is probably timber-framed. The right-hand ground-storey wall is made of stone rubble, and the right-hand gable is constructed of old red brick, set at a slightly different angle from the walling below and supported at the front by a wooden corbel. The building has a slate roof, and no chimneys are visible from the street.

The structure has a simple oblong plan with no signs of original partitions in the ground storey, which features a staircase at the right-hand end that opens directly from the street. It is two storeys high, with the ground storey having been wholly altered to include late 20th-century wood-framed display windows. The upper storey, which has an early or mid-19th-century character, features a 6-paned, flush-framed sash window to the right, and a plank loading door to the left, which has a small window cut into its centre. The interior was only inspected on the ground storey, where there is a very thick unchamfered ceiling beam parallel to the street, supporting relatively narrow, deep joists.
