Description

The Midland Bank, located at No. 11 on The Quay in Bideford, is a large house that was converted into a bank in the mid-19th century. The building features solid rendered walls, with part of the rear wall made of exposed stone rubble and red-brick dressings. It has a hipped slate roof and rendered chimneys topped with moulded cornices. The structure stands three stories tall and has an asymmetrical front with seven windows, which may conceal at least one earlier building.

To the left, there is a square projection with three windows, while to the right, a slightly less prominent canted bay also has three windows. The main entrance is located in a one-window recessed center. The right side of the building has a three-window return front facing Cooper Street, and there is uniform detailing across both frontages. The ground storey is horizontally channelled, and the second-storey windows have moulded architraves, with cornices on consoles for all but the two outer windows on the return front. The bracketed sills are set on a continuous raised band. The third-storey windows are simpler, featuring a plain design with a raised sill-band. All windows are six-paned sashes, except for those on the third storey, where the upper sashes have only three panes. The building has a bracketed eaves cornice, and the rear elevation facing King Street has barred sashes that match those at the front.

The interior of the building was inspected only in the banking hall at the front of the ground storey, which has been wholly altered. The Midland Bank occupies a prominent position on the Quay frontage.
