Description
6 and 8 High Street is a building that has been converted from a house into a shop, offices, and stores. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with the ground floor featuring rusticated stucco. It has a hipped tiled roof that is concealed by a high brick parapet topped with stone coping and a deep moulded eaves cornice.
The exterior is three storeys high and has a five-window range. The first floor features six-over-six sash windows with painted channelled voussoirs, keystones, and sills, while the second floor has smaller three-over-six sash windows. The ground floor includes two remodelled 20th-century plate glass bay shop windows, with the left window having a recessed entrance. There is a blocked central doorway that has a moulded architrave, a channelled stucco reveal, pilasters, a console-bracketed cornice, and a stone step. The frontage also has a vestigial moulded frieze and end pilasters, along with a moulded plinth. The interior has not been inspected.
