Description

Smythapark Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that is currently unoccupied as of January 1985. The building has been heightened at the upper end and refenestrated in the 19th century, and it was undergoing further remodelling at the time of the survey. It is constructed of rubble stone with some cob and has an asbestos slate roof that is hipped at the lower end. There are rubble stacks at the lower end and a tall lateral front hall stack, both featuring drips, weatherings, and tapered caps, along with a tall brick stack at the right end.

The farmhouse has a 3-cell through-passage plan with an extended lower end and stands two storeys high. It has a five-window range that includes three 19th-century two-light casements at the lower end, a horned sash, and a two-light casement at the upper end. There is a lean-to with a corrugated iron roof at the right-angled projection on the lower front end, and a lean-to with an asbestos slate roof covering a double porch that has a plank door to the left. To the right, there is a weathered 17th-century through-passage doorframe with a chamfered cranked head, along with a 20th-century plank door.

Inside, there is a bread oven and the hall stack to the right, with a continuation of the asbestos slate roof over a pushed-out hall window that has an inserted 20th-century casement. The rear features outshuts with a roof that is part slate and part corrugated asbestos. The roof space has not been inspected.
