Description
Brinsworthy Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, possibly incorporating an earlier structure, with alterations likely made in the mid to late 19th century. The building is rendered, probably over stone rubble and cob, and features a gable-ended scantle-slate roof. It has 17th-century stone stacks with weatherings, one of which has a later red-brick top, along with a 20th-century rendered brick stack.
The farmhouse may have a three-room and cross passage plan, facing southwest. It has a roughly central axial stack in front of the ridge, an integral end stack (which has been rebuilt) to the left, and a ridge stack that is off-center to the left. There are entrances to the left of the central stack (which may be a cross-passage entrance) and in front of the right-hand stack. One room to the right of the stack is possibly a later addition. At the rear, there is a lean-to outshut.
The exterior features an asymmetrical seven-window front with late 19th-century wooden casements. The entrance is to the left, with a 20th-century porch, and there is a boarded door to the right. The rear has a central first-floor late 17th-century two-light leaded casement that is off-center to the left, along with a staircase window that is off-center to the right and has margin lights. The lean-to has two 20th-century casements to the left and two boarded doors to the right.
The interior was not inspected during the survey in September 1987, but the previous listing description from 1967 mentions "massive ceiling beams concealed by plaster," indicating that further investigation of the interior is needed.
