Description

Lower Locks Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage located on the north side of East Street in North Molton, with a minor addition likely dating to the 18th or 19th century. The cottage is built of rendered cob and has a gable-ended roof covered in Welsh slate. It follows a two-room baffle-entry plan, where the ground falls to the right, with a larger room to the left and a winder staircase to the rear of the central stack. A lean-to addition is present at the rear, potentially of 18th or 19th-century origin.

The cottage is two storeys high and sits on a high plinth. The front facade has a two-window arrangement, featuring late 20th-century two-light wooden casements. A central, half-glazed door, added in the 20th century, is approached by a flight of six external steps with a 20th-century wrought iron balustrade.

Inside, the principal ground-floor room to the left retains a 17th-century chamfered spine beam and wall beam towards the front, along with a window seat. A boarded door with strap hinges leads to the rear lean-to addition. A steep 17th-century winder staircase is situated to the rear of the stack, with a boarded door at the front of the left-hand room. The right-hand ground-floor room (the kitchen) features a blocked old fireplace with a wooden lintel.
