Description

Hill Crest Slader's is a pair of houses built in the mid to late 18th century, with some minor alterations made in the early to mid 20th century. The ground floor is rendered over stone rubble, while the first floor is made of cob. The houses have a gable-ended roof covered with Welsh slate, which was likely thatched originally, and they feature rendered brick stacks.

The layout consists of two cottages, with the larger one on the left having two rooms, a central entrance, a staircase, and an axial end stack on the right. The smaller cottage on the right has a one-room plan and an integral end stack also on the right. It is possible that the left-hand house originally had an end stack on the left that was truncated when a passageway was added at that end, as indicated by new tiles on the roof.

The exterior presents an asymmetrical five-bay front. The 18th-century windows include boxed 12-pane glazing bar sashes, with a central 16-pane glazing bar sash on the ground floor. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed canted bay window on the left, which was formerly a shop window. The second bay from the left has a 20th-century half-glazed margin-light door, while the second bay from the right has a 20th-century half-glazed door. A boarded door has been inserted for the passageway at the left-hand end. The rear of the left-hand house features a ground-floor 18th-century glazing bar sash.

Inside the left-hand house, internal alterations were taking place at the time of the survey in September 1987. There is a 19th-century fireplace in the right-hand room and a seat in the rear window. The staircase had been removed, and there was a blocked doorway to the right of the entrance, with straight joints exposed inside at the time of the survey.
