Description
Scott's Cottage and Nos 1 and 2, Mole Cottages is a row of three cottages, originally four, likely built in the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are constructed of rendered cob on a painted sandstone rubble plinth and feature a half-hipped asbestos slate roof, with a corrugated-iron roof on a lean-to addition. The chimneys have late 20th or early 20th century red brick tops.
The cottages are arranged at right angles to the road, facing southwest. The left-hand cottage likely started as two separate cottages, featuring two integral lateral stacks at the rear. The central cottage has a smaller room on the right and a larger room on the left, with one integral lateral stack at the rear. The right-hand cottage, which was formerly a pair of one-room plan cottages, also has an integral lateral stack at the rear, where each room previously had a corner fireplace. A probable 19th-century lean-to addition is located at the right-hand gable end.
The exterior displays an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with nine on the first floor and eight on the ground floor, mostly consisting of mid to late 19th-century small-paned two-light wooden casements. There is a 19th-century half-glazed door situated between the second and third windows from the left, topped by a slate-roofed gabled porch on shaped brackets. A 20th-century boarded stable-type door is found between the fourth and fifth windows from the left, while a pair of late 20th-century glazed doors is located at the far right and between the second and third windows from the right. The left-hand gable end features a first-floor two-light wooden casement and a ground-floor boarded door with a 20th-century casement to the right. The right-hand gable end has a first-floor two-light wooden casement and a ground-floor lean-to addition.
Inside, the ground-floor rooms have roughly chamfered cross beams. A 18th-century winder stair is located at the rear of the central cottage (No. 1 Mole Cottage). Only the interior of the central cottage and the ground floor rooms of the right-hand cottage were inspected.
