Description

Newhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, that includes a former barn converted into part of the dwelling. The building is constructed of white-washed rendered rubble and features slate roofs with gable ends. There is a large stack with a drip and a bread oven at the left end, along with a lateral hall stack at the rear. The layout is a 3-cell through-passage plan, with the inner room partition removed and a dairy beyond. The former barn is attached at the right gable end.

The building is two storeys high and has a four-window range featuring 19th to 20th century two-light casements with overlights, followed by two sash windows with three over six panes, and then a two-light casement above three two-light casements and a fixed light to the dairy. There is a gabled porch leading to the through-passage, which has a slightly cambered arch and a 17th-century inner doorway with a stopped and moulded surround. The door consists of five panels with chamfers on the cover strips. An original barn door has a slated canopy with a 20th-century window inserted. A lean-to projecting at the right end also has a slated roof. A stone hoodmould is present above a blocked window at the left gable end.

Inside, there is an elaborately moulded fireplace lintel with scroll stops and a carved date of 1695. Both the large stack and the hall stack contain bread ovens. The roof structure dates from the late 18th to 19th century.
