Description

Lower Birch Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse, altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered rubble with a slate roof, featuring stacks at each gable end with slate offsets and brick shafts, the left side being rendered. A truncated lateral stack is present at the rear. The farmhouse has a 2-room and through-passage plan, incorporating outshuts with shallow service rooms. The front elevation has a 3-window range of 19th-century hornless 12-paned sash windows on the upper floor, and 2 similar sashes on the ground floor, flanking a gabled porch with a semi-circular headed doorway containing a 4-panelled door. A lean-to with a corrugated iron roof is attached to the right end, and a brick and rubble outshut with a corrugated iron roof is at the rear. The rear outshut incorporates a horizontal sliding sash window with 4 panes per light, 5 pigeon holes, and a 19th-century 3-light casement window with 6 panes per light to the right. The interior of the farmhouse was not inspected.
