Description

Barnfield Cottage is a tenement farmhouse, likely built in the 17th century, with an extension added in February 1985. The building features whitewashed rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatch roof that has gable ends. There are stacks at the right end, including a drip and an axial rubble stack. The layout consists of single cells on each side of a lobby entrance, with a two-storied extension at the left end that incorporates parts of a former shippon and possibly the original site of a cross-passage.

The main range is two storeys high and three windows wide, featuring 19th-century two-light casements, two of which retain L-hinges. Flanking the 20th-century rubble porch and half-glazed door are two additional 20th-century two-light casements. At the rear, there are outshuts with corrugated iron roofs. Inside, there is a cambered chamfered and stopped fireplace lintel at the right end stack, and a moulded plaster cornice partially survives in the room to the left of the lobby entrance, along with some old joinery. The roof structure consists of pegged trusses with straight principal rafters and waney common rafters, showing no signs of smoke-blackening.
