Description
Dowrich Mill is a water mill that likely dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is partly made of cob on rubble footings and partly of mortared volcanic rubble, topped with a slate roof. It features a gable-ended block facing east, with remnants of a leat at the rear and a right (north) end that is terraced into the hillslope. The building has two storeys with attics.
On the east front, there is one window on the first floor, flanked by loading bays, with the bay to the right accessed from a higher ground level. A door is located at the left end of the ground floor, and the roof slopes down from right to left. The rear elevation shows the left (northern) section of mortared rubble projecting forward from the main range, which contains the remains of an iron-framed overshot wheel. A mortared rubble tail race wall extends westward from the northern (left) end.
The south gable end is timber framed and now covered with corrugated iron, while the north gable end features an early 17th-century oak 2-light window frame that has been presumably reset, showcasing an external ogee and internal ovolo moulding in the attic. Inside, the mill retains plain carpentry details and extensive remains of 19th-century mill machinery. The roof, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, consists of tie beam trusses without collars, which are halved and cross at the apex to support the ridge; it has three bays in the higher northern section and two in the lower section.
