Description

Hynams is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It has been significantly altered, originally serving as three cottages in the 18th century, and extended in the mid-20th century. The building features plastered rubble with sections of cob, rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and a thatched roof.

The main block has three rooms and faces east, with forward projecting gable-ended blocks at each end. There is a lateral stack in the center of the main block that projects to the front, and a rear gable-end stack on the right (north) cross wing. A left (south) cross wing was added in the mid-20th century. The house is two storeys tall and has a two-window front on the main block, featuring 20th-century casements, one on either side of the stack with an oven projection. The first floor has half dormers with thatched gables, the left one being larger than the right. There is a door to the right with a 20th-century gabled porch set back from the main front. The right gable end of the cross wing has a tall narrow 20th-century window.

On the rear elevation, there is a small 18th-century two-light stair window with small rectangular leaded panes to the left of the stack of the north cross wing, and to the right of the main block, there is a tiny 19th-century stairlight. The interior largely reflects 18th-century alterations, with the main block featuring plain carpentry details. The northern cross wing retains late 16th to early 17th-century fabric, including a chamfered and step-stopped crossbeam, a massive stone stack with a side oven, a winder stair to the right, and a common rafter roof between the gable ends.
