Description
Lower Woodbeer is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, likely originating in the 16th century with improvements made in the 17th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped with brick from the 19th and 20th centuries, and features a thatched roof. The house has a three-room-and-through-passage layout, facing south, with the inner room located at the left (west) end. There is a rear lateral stack for the hall and an end stack for the inner room, along with continuous outshots along the rear. The building is two storeys high and has an irregular front with five windows, featuring late 19th and early 20th century casements with glazing bars. To the left, there is a symmetrical arrangement of three 3-light casements around a secondary door that has been inserted into the inner room. A plank door is located towards the right end, leading to the original through passage. The roof is half-hipped at both ends. Although access to the interior was not possible during the survey, it was noted that the passage is lined with 16th century oak plank-and-muntin screens, which are chamfered with step stops. The house remains unmodernised and is believed to contain many other features from the 16th and 17th centuries.
