Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a rectory, built around 1840-1850. It is constructed from mudstone rubble with painted ashlar details, featuring stone rubble stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts, topped with a slate roof. The building is a double-depth house facing southeast, comprising three front rooms and additional rear rooms under a parallel roof. The outer front rooms project slightly forward. The main entrance is located at the rear of the left (southwestern) side, leading into an entrance hall and staircase. There is a rear block under a parallel roof, which includes a fourth room that projects to the right (northeast) with a lower roofline.

The house is two storeys tall with attics and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. The main front has three windows, with the outer bays slightly projecting forward and featuring gable ends. The windows on both the first and ground floors are square-headed, with two lights, 4-centred arched heads, sunken spandrels, and moulded reveals. All windows contain sashes with glazing bars and much original glass. The outer ground floor windows have slightly projecting four-light bay windows, designed in a similar style, with a coved cornice decorated with four-leaf motifs and an embattled parapet. There are slit ventilators under the gables and small pendants at the apexes.

On the left (southwestern) side elevation, there is a gabled porch featuring a two-centred outer arch with a moulded surround and hoodmould. The original door has six upright panels with linenfold decoration and an overlight with glazing bars. The gables on this side, including the porch, have kneelers and coping. The divided stacks have soffit-moulded caps. To the right (northeast) is a low service wing that includes an original stone-mullioned two-light window on the first floor and 20th-century French doors on the ground floor. The rear of the house features sash windows with glazing bars. Inside, the property retains much original plasterwork and joinery.
