Description
Alderford Mill is a water mill dating from the 18th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded. The mill features a red tiled gambrel roof, which has two gabled dormers on the east and west sides, and a gabled weatherboarded hoist loft on the south. The building has two storeys and a loft.
On the south face, there are three-light windows on the ground floor, a vertically boarded door on the first floor, and a small-paned window in the hoist loft. The east face includes an angled two-storey weatherboarded extension on the left with a corrugated iron roof, and a single-storey red brick extension on the right that has a slate roof, dog tooth eaves cornice, and a round-headed iron window with glazed margins. There is also a 20th-century single-storey infill lean-to between these extensions. The first floor has two three-light windows and small-paned casements in the dormers.
The north face features three ranges of two windows, along with an apex window containing various small-paned casements, casements with transoms, and pivot casements. The base is faced with brick. The west face has a small single-storey weatherboarded and grey slate gabled extension to the south, which includes an entrance door and a small-paned casement. The north base is also faced with brick. The ground floor has a two-window range, with the right window now blocked, and a vertically boarded door. There are three small-paned vertically sliding sash windows on the flint floor and two small-paned windows near the door.
Inside, the mill retains complete machinery, which likely includes a 17th-century wooden undershot wheel, a great compass arm, a great spur wheel, and a wooden vertical shaft. There is a 19th-century cast iron wallower. The first floor contains two pairs of millstones, a vertical shaft, and a wooden crown wheel driving a layshaft with pulleys. The second floor has grain bin partitions and additional pulleys.
