Description

An 18th-century malting barn is located on the south side of Alderford Street in Sible Hedingham. The barn is timber-framed with a brick-faced ground floor and weatherboarded first floor. A red brick heating bay, originally present on the right, retains its form, although the roof was rebuilt after a fire. The roof is red-tiled, half-hipped, with a jettied gabled hoist loft on the left. The barn has two storeys and attics. Dormers with three lights are set into the front and rear roof slopes. The front of the ground floor has a five-window range, while the rear has a six-window range. The first floor front displays a ten-window range, and the rear a six-window range, with a single window in the hoist loft. All windows are of three lights, most with missing glazing. Vertically boarded doors are located on the ground floor left and right, and a door is situated on the first floor right. Features include hanging knees to the bridging joists and tie beams. The building is considered to be a good example of its type.
