Description

Grantlands Cottage and Brook Villa are two houses likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century. They are constructed from plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped by 20th-century bricks and a thatched roof.

The two adjoining cottages each have a two-room layout and face south, featuring central entrance lobbies. Grantlands Cottage is on the left (west) and has a projecting left end stack, while Brook Villa is on the right (east) and has a rear lateral stack serving its right room. The White Hart Hotel is located adjacent to the right end of Brook Villa. Notably, Grantlands Cottage has a flying freehold first-floor room above the ground floor room of Brook Villa. Both houses are two storeys high and present a regular five-window front, featuring a mix of late 19th-century and 20th-century casements, most of which have glazing bars. The front doors are from the 20th century. The roof is continuous, with a slight drop in the ridge and eaves between the two houses, and it is hipped to the left. The left end stack has been rebuilt using 20th-century brick quoins, and the rear left corner of the building is canted.

Inside, the cottages reveal plain carpentry details where visible. The left room of Grantlands Cottage features an unstopped chamfered crossbeam, while the left room of Brook Villa has a similar axial beam. The roof has not been inspected.
