Description
This is a cottage, likely dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. It’s constructed with plastered cob walls on rubble footings, featuring a cob or rubble stack topped with 20th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage originally had a two-room plan, facing south, with a central entrance and staircase. A large stack projects from the right (east) end, and a 20th-century single-storey lean-to extension is located on the left (west) end.
The front facade is symmetrical, featuring three windows with 20th-century casements and glazing bars, and a central 20th-century door with a contemporary monopitch and glass-roofed porch. The roof has a high pitch, is hipped to the left, and has a late 19th-century eaves gutter supported by iron brackets.
Inside, there is little original carpentry. The larger, right-hand room contains a large, neatly-squared crossbeam, and a large cob and rubble fireplace with a plain oak lintel. The roof was not inspected. The cottage contributes significantly to the character of Bow Village and is the first house encountered when approaching from the west.
