Description
Hildons Cottage is a pair of cottages, originally a single house, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It was modernised in the late 19th century. The construction is of plastered cob and rubble, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and a thatched roof.
The cottages have a two-room plan facing south, with a carriageway running through the building at the right (east) end, and a small bedchamber above it. The right-hand cottage has two rear lateral stacks, while the left-hand cottage has an axial stack between the two rooms. The front has an irregular four-window arrangement, featuring a mix of late 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars, and a late 19th and 20th-century canted bay window containing horned, large-pane sashes with glazing bars, positioned roughly in the centre. To the left of the bay window is a part-glazed late 19th-century door leading to the left-hand cottage, which was originally the main entrance when Hildons was a single house. The right-hand cottage is accessed via late 19th-century plank double doors leading to the carriageway, and a former service door inside the passage.
The interior is largely a result of late 19th-century modernisation, though some 18th-century joinery remains, and further 18th-century features are likely concealed. The roof was not inspected.
