Description

Numbers 2 and 3 Wallens Cottages are two adjoining cottages built in the mid-19th century. They are constructed from plastered cob and rubble, with rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a slate roof. The cottages face north and form the left half of a gable-ended row of similar cottages.

The main block runs parallel to the roadside and is double depth. Number 2, on the right, features a central entrance lobby with front and back rooms on either side, and axial stacks at both ends. Number 3, on the left, has its entrance lobby and stairs on the right side, with front and back rooms to the left served by an end stack. There is also a rear service block at right angles behind Number 3, which has an outer lateral stack.

Both cottages are two storeys high and have a regular three-window front. The original windows are 16-pane sashes, although the left end of the ground floor has been replaced by late 19th-century casements with glazing bars. Each cottage has a six-panel door with overlights between them; the overlight for Number 2 has glazing bars, while the one for Number 3 is blocked. The rear of the cottages mostly retains original casements with glazing bars. The roof has a very low pitch, and the interiors have seen little modernization.
