Description
1 The Square is a cottage that adjoins Den Croft and dates from the 18th century, possibly earlier. It is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and features a hipped roof, thatched at the front and covered with corrugated iron at the rear. Originally, it was a two-room cottage, likely with a central cross passage, and it has two storeys.
The front of the cottage has a two-window range. On the first floor, there are three-light 19th-century casement windows with lintels at eaves level. The ground floor features two three-light casement windows to the left of a half-glazed and panelled door. To the right, there is a bay window with a 1:3:1 pane configuration, which was formerly a shop, and another half-glazed and panelled door to the right of this. At the rear, there is a lateral stack that is engulfed in a brick lean-to, which may be external, along with a 19th-century two-light casement window on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected. The cottage is situated in a prominent position on The Square and is included for its group value.
