Description

Hillhead is a detached house that likely dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone footings, with the left-end wall rebuilt in concrete blocks. The roof is finished with gable end slate and asbestos slate. Originally, the house had a 3 or 4-room cross passage plan, with the service end located to the right of a former passage that no longer exists. An axial stack, primarily made of stone, heats the hall and probably backed onto the passage. There is also an internal end stack with a brick shaft serving the service end, while the inner room remains unheated. The house has two storeys.

The front exterior features a four-window range, with the first floor displaying 18th or early 19th century two and three-light pegged casement windows, and lintels at eaves level. The ground floor has three three-light casement windows, and French windows may indicate the original location of the passage. The rear of the house includes a lean-to and a small two-light window with a chamfered mullion and surround, positioned immediately behind the axial (hall) stack, which leads to the newel stairs.

Inside, the service end has been divided by partitions and features two chamfered cross ceiling beams with hollow step stops, along with a stopped cross beam in the hall. An unchamfered beam between the hall and the inner room has mortices for muntins, suggesting there was once a partition between these two rooms, which has since been removed. The roof retains one jointed cruck from the original structure, which is pegged and morticed at the apex and includes a diagonal ridge piece, along with some 18th century pegged principals.
