Description
ST 01 SE UFFCULME ASHILL 4/152 Drew's Farmhouse - - II Detached house, formerly a farmhouse. C16 (a late medieval date is possible) with later modifications. Roughcast stone and cob, with brick end wall to the left. Gable-end thatched roof. Plan: 3-room, through-passage plan house, the higher end to the right of the passage. At some point the service end was shortened. The internal division between hall and inner room is of cob, with lath and plaster above. The house is of jointed cruck construction, with massive purlins, but the roof space is inaccessible and this increases the problems of dating. Hall heated by an all-stone axial stack backing on to the passage; inner room heated by an internal end stack with late-C19 brick shaft. 2 storeys. Exterior. Front: 4-window range. 3-light C19 casement windows to first floor. Leanto brick porch (to through passage) set at entrance left-hand side (owing to the truncation of the service end); 3-light casement windows to hall and inner room, with buttress between. No windows to rear. Interior: hall with 1 full and two half-axial ceiling beams, deeply chamfered with pyramid stops. Boxed axial ceiling beam to inner room. Blocked fireplaces to both rooms. Roof: 3 large trusses visible beneath thick wallpaper, but almost certainly side- pegged jointed crucks.
