Description
Lower Beer is a detached house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered, featuring three gabled-end roofs all covered in slate, though the roof ridge lines are at varying levels. Originally, it had a three-room, cross-passage plan, but extensive internal rearrangements have made it difficult to identify the exact location of the passage, which likely lies to the left of a large front lateral external stack that has three set-offs. The end room, or parlour, has been demolished, resulting in each component of the house being under different roof levels. The house is two storeys tall.
The front of the house has scattered fenestration, with all windows featuring 20th-century barred casements—four on the first floor and five on the ground floor. There is a left-hand door and another door to the left of the lateral stack, which is under a lean-to open porch that leads into the passage.
Inside, there is a pointed doorway arch, which may not be in its original position, and a plank and muntin screen in the middle room, although this is now placed behind the room and is only visible from the rear. The right-hand room, likely the hall, features a front fireplace with stone jambs, cyma recta mouldings, and a replaced lintel. Above this room, there are two jointed crucks that are pegged and morticed at the apex and are in good condition.
