Description
Sutton Barton is a farmhouse built in 1866 for G.Q. Pedlar, following the destruction of an older house, possibly from the 17th century, part of which remains as a rear wing. The building is constructed of stone with a rendered finish, while the rear wing is made of cob and plastered, all covered by gabled-end slate roofs. It features a lateral stack with two set-offs on the outer face of the wing, and two stacks positioned at the rear of the main range roof ridge, all with brick shafts.
The farmhouse is two stories tall, with an attic storey in the gable walls of the main range. The front facade is symmetrical, with a window arrangement of 2:1:2. It has overhanging eaves supported by paired console brackets that create a broken pediment above the central bay. The central porch is made of stone and features a broken pediment similar to that above, with a moulded string course that rises as a moulded architrave over a round-headed doorway. The door is panelled and glazed, topped with a semi-circular fanlight.
Above the porch, there is a 12-pane hornless sash window with a round head, while the remaining windows are square-headed 12-pane hornless sash windows, all set beneath rusticated lintels with keystones. Each end of the main range has two similar windows on both floors, two of which are blocked, and there is one window in the gable wall. A round-headed 15-pane sash window illuminates the rear stairwell. The rear wing includes a first-floor window with two lights, each containing ten leaded panes, and another window on the ground floor with saddle bars.
