HALBERTON BRITHEM BOTTOM Channings

(Formerly listed as Overdale)

GV II Detached house. Early C16, much altered and enlarged. Random rubble and cob, plastered, the wing with brick to first floor; plastered, under hipped and half-hipped thatched roof. Probably a two-room plan, if there ever was a cross-passage it was blocked by the inserted stack, forming a baffle entrance plan. Stack to rear of roof ridge with brick shafts. One and a half storeys.

Front: the left-hand section of the front projects, its curved corner containing the newel stair, the small landing above the door lit by a small single light window; otherwise no first floor window to this elevation; two two-light C19 casement windows with external shutters, and a C20 two-light window. Two-light casement windows to right hand end; C19 and C20 windows to both rear elevation and rear wing, those to the main range under eyebrow eaves; extension to wing, formerly a barn, now converted to living room open to roof. Two old planked doors survive.

Roof: jointed cruck, with apex morticed and pegged, collar replaced trenched purlins, smoke-blackened, adjacent to inserted stack and indicates that the hall was originally open to the roof.
