Description

Channings is a detached house located in Halberton, originally listed as Overdale. It dates back to the early 16th century and has undergone significant alterations and enlargements. The building is constructed of random rubble and cob, with plastering, and features a brick first-floor wing. It has a hipped and half-hipped thatched roof and is likely based on a two-room plan, although any original cross-passage has been blocked by an inserted stack, creating a baffle entrance plan. The stack is positioned at the rear of the roof ridge and has brick shafts. The house has one and a half storeys.

The front of the house features a left-hand section that projects, with a curved corner housing the newel stair. Above the entrance door, there is a small landing lit by a single light window. This elevation does not have any first-floor windows. There are two two-light 19th-century casement windows with external shutters, along with a 20th-century two-light window. The right-hand end has two-light casement windows, and both the rear elevation and rear wing contain 19th and 20th-century windows, with those on the main range positioned under eyebrow eaves. The wing, which was formerly a barn, has been converted into a living room that is open to the roof. Additionally, two old planked doors remain intact.

The roof structure features jointed cruck construction, with the apex morticed and pegged. The collar has been replaced, and the purlins are trenched, showing smoke-blackening near the inserted stack, indicating that the hall was originally open to the roof.
