Description

Little Hackland is a detached house, probably dating from the early 16th century, but significantly altered in the 19th century. It is constructed from a mix of cob and stone, with some areas patched in brick and roughcast. The left-hand gable wall has been refaced in corrugated iron, and the building is topped with a synthetic slate gabled end roof. Originally, it was a three-room cross-passage house, but the left-hand room, likely the lower end, was rebuilt in the 19th century, resulting in a roof-ridge line that is considerably higher than the rest of the structure.

There is an axial stack at the junction of the old and new sections, which was formerly external, and a rear lateral stack, both featuring brick shafts. The house has two storeys. The front elevation, which now faces away from the road, includes one 12-pane horned sash window on each floor from the 19th-century rebuild. The remainder of the front has a four-window range, with one window featuring a 19th-century barred casement and the others being 20th-century metal casements. The ground floor has four casement windows, and there is a 20th-century covered porch. Above the timber lean-to porch at the left-hand end is a 12-pane hornless sash window. The rear elevation has four casement windows from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Inside, the hall features three axial beams that are chamfered, with two having run-out stops and one with hollow-step stops. The roof contains two crossed, morticed and pegged trusses, likely from the late 16th or 17th century, and over the hall, there is one jointed cruck that is slightly smoke-blackened.
