Description
ST OO NE KENTISBEARE 8/81 Nos 1 & 2 Kentismoor Cottages - II Range of 2 cottages, originally 3 or more. Probably late C17 or C18: Kentismoor was still a tract of wet, uncultivated land when the antiquary Sir William Pole (1561-1635) wrote. Roughcast cob on stone footings; hipped and gable end thatched roof. Built as a range of single-depth Cottages; overall an L-shaped plan; no 2 (Kentismoor Cottage) was possibly the first to be built (2-room cottage, or more likely, 2 single-roomed cottages, with external cob end stacks with ovens), with no 1 (originally 2 or more cottages) forming the longer range to the rear, and now heated by one axial stack; this range is also single-depth and comprises 3 rooms and a C19 or C20 lean to at the end. 2 storeys. Exterior Front: (north) 5 window range; all first floor windows are 2-light casements under eyebrow eaves; 4 ground floor windows and 2 doors. No. 2 (Kentismoor Cottage) faces west, 4 window range, first floor windows 2 light casements, lintels at eaves level; 3 windows and roughly central door to ground floor. Rear (south): 4 window range; all casement windows are late C20, those to the first floor under eyebrow eaves. Roof: straight, A-profile, hewn principals, pegged with halved collars. These cottages run parallel to the roughly contemporary Nos 3 and 4 Kentismoor Cottages (q.v.), and together form a striking group. Fireplaces with chamfered lintels.
