Description
Kentismoor Cottages is a range of two cottages, originally three or more, likely built in the late 17th century or 18th century. At the time of writing by the antiquary Sir William Pole, Kentismoor was still an area of wet, uncultivated land. The cottages are constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and feature a thatched roof with both hipped and gable ends. The layout is L-shaped, with No. 2 (Kentismoor Cottage) possibly being the first built. It consists of two rooms, or more likely, two single-roomed cottages, each with external cob end stacks that include ovens. No. 1, originally two or more cottages, forms the longer range at the rear and is now heated by a single axial stack. This range is also single-depth and includes three rooms along with a lean-to added in the 19th or 20th century.
The cottages are two storeys high. The front (north) elevation has five windows, with all first-floor windows being two-light casements set under eyebrow eaves. There are four ground-floor windows and two doors. No. 2 (Kentismoor Cottage) faces west and has a four-window range, with first-floor windows also being two-light casements with lintels at eaves level, and three windows along with a roughly central door on the ground floor. The rear (south) elevation features a four-window range, with all casement windows dating from the late 20th century, and those on the first floor are under eyebrow eaves. The roof has a straight, A-profile design with hewn principals that are pegged with halved collars. These cottages run parallel to the similarly dated Nos 3 and 4 Kentismoor Cottages, forming a notable group. Inside, the fireplaces have chamfered lintels.
