Description
The carriage house and pigeon house, located in the farmyard at Belthayes Farm, were originally part of the home farm for Dulford House, built around 1762 to 1800 and demolished in the 1930s. The buildings date from the late 18th century and are constructed of handmade brick in Flemish bond, with a hipped slate roof at both ends.
The carriage house has a rectangular plan featuring a series of large arches on each side, some of which are blind or blocked, with one archway providing access to the yard in front of the farmhouse. The west elevation, which faces away from the farmyard, has five full-height round-headed brick arches; the central archway is open, while the others are blind. Some rebuilding has occurred at the south end using machine-made brick. The east elevation, facing the farmyard, includes the archway to the left, two blocked round-headed arches, a large square opening with paired timber doors, and a lower round-headed opening with paired timber doors.
A cupola that once stood over the archway has been removed for safety reasons but still exists to the west of the carriage house, featuring a lead roof, a weathervane, and round-headed timber openings. The adjoining pigeon house to the south-east has a hipped slate roof and an oculus on the north side. The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with the farmhouse and stable block.
