Description
Nether Mill Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse that has undergone later alterations and extensions. It is constructed from a mix of cob and stone, plastered, and features a gabled-end slate roof. Originally designed with a three-room, through-passage layout, the higher end is located to the right of the passage, while the lower end, which has a higher roof ridge, was rebuilt in the 19th century. The right-hand end stack heats the parlour, an axial stack backing onto the passage heats the hall, and a rear internal lateral stack heats the lower end, all equipped with brick shafts.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a front that has a four-window range. The first floor features two- and three-light casement windows, one of which is from the 19th century, while the ground floor has 20th-century three-light windows and a slate-roofed porch. At the rear, there is a lean-to with two- and three-light casement windows on both floors.
Inside, the hall contains two cross beams; one has cyma recta moulding, and the other features a composite cyma recta and ovolo moulding. There is a bressumer that would have supported a screen (now removed) between the hall and the parlour. The parlour has three chamfered axial beams with hollow step stops. The roof consists of three jointed crucks, with the cruck above the passage being closed. The apex has a yoke and is side pegged, with collars that are also morticed and side pegged, along with a diagonal ridge piece. The crucks extend well down into the wall, and the bressumer for the hall/parlour screen is morticed into one of them. All elements are in a clean condition.
