Description

HALBERTON ST 01 SW 2/167 Nether Mill Farmhouse - GV II

Farmhouse. Late C16, with later alterations and extensions. Cob and stone mix, plastered, under gabled-end slate roof. Formerly a 3-room, through-passage plan, the higher end to the right of the passage; the lower end, under a higher roof- ridge, was rebuilt in the C19. Right hand end stack heats parlour; axial stack backing on to passage heats hall, rear internal lateral stack heats lower end; all with brick shafts. 2-storeys. Front: 4-window range, 2- and 3-light casement windows to first floor, 1 of the 3-light windows C19; C20 3-light windows to ground floor, with slate-roofed porch. Lean-to at rear, 2- and 3-light casement windows to both floors. Interior: hall with 2 cross beams, one with cyma recta moulding, the other with composite cyma recta and ovolo moulding; bressumer to receive screen (now gone) between hall and parlour; parlour with 3 chamfered axial beams with hollow step stops. Roof: 3 jointed crucks, that above passage closed, apex with yoke, side pegged; collars morticed and side pegged; diagonal ridge peice. The crucks come well down into the wall and the hall/parlour screen bressumer is morticed into 1 of them. All clean.
