Description
Deanswell is a detached cottage located in Halberton, dating from the 16th or 17th century, with possible earlier elements and later alterations and additions. The building is constructed of plastered cob with stone footings and features a thatched roof with gabled ends. It likely follows a three-room, cross passage plan, with the higher end situated to the right of the passage and a rear parlour wing.
The cottage has an external front stack, which includes one set-off and two string-courses, likely made of stone with a plastered brick shaft, that heats the hall. There is also an internal end stack that heats the inner room, featuring a brick shaft. The building is two storeys high.
On the front, there are two 2-light casement windows on the first floor, both positioned to the right of the external stack. The ground floor has three 2-light windows, but only one of these has glazing bars. A 20th-century pantiled and boarded porch is present, along with a left-hand end lean-to extension.
The interior has not been inspected, but two chamfered cross beams are visible, as well as a chamfered door surround with a pointed arch at the rear, which presumably leads to the stairs. This house may also contain an ancient roof.
