Description
Halberton Primary School, formerly known as Halberton First National School, is a primary school built in 1844. The building is constructed from coursed volcanic trap rubble and features gabled end slate roofs. It has a main range with two cross wings and is single-storeyed. The front of the school is asymmetrical, with each of the two cross wings containing three-light windows that have transoms and chamfered surrounds. The main range has three windows, with two located between the cross wings and one in the left extension, all of which are square-headed and feature almost intact latticed glazing bars. The gable walls of the wings include a name and date plaque. The rear of the building is nearly identical to the front, except that one of the wings does not project and has a half-hipped roof. There is also a rectangular ablution and latrine block, along with a single-storeyed 20th-century kitchen extension under a flat roof on one side. The school is situated on an important site facing the south front of the parish church.
