Description

Willhays is a detached cottage dating from the early 17th century, situated in Halberton. The cottage is constructed of roughcast cob with a stone plinth, and has a gabled slate roof. Originally a two-room plan with a central entrance, though the original layout is now uncertain. There are two end stacks with brick shafts.

The front elevation features three-light casement windows on both floors, with glazing bars added in the 19th century: one window to the first floor and two to the ground floor. A substantial gabled porch, built of roughcast, shelters a tall brick arched doorway with an arched fanlight and a 20th-century door. A small window is set just below the eaves to the left of the porch. A 20th-century extension has been added to the left-hand end, and a single 20th-century two-light window is visible at the right-hand end.

Inside, the cottage retains two ceiling cross beams, which are chamfered with scroll stops, and a chamfered lintel over the fireplace. The roof structure includes three trusses, crossed and pegged, with purlins resting on the backs of the principals.
