Description
The Vicarage and The Old Rectory is a Vicarage with a wing that is now separately occupied, built in 1847 by John Hayward. It is constructed from coursed volcanic trap and features gabled-end slate roofs. The building has a double-depth plan with two parallel ranges separated by a central stair hall that has a side entrance. At the opposite side, there is a cross wing that continues to the rear as a service wing, which is also separately occupied. The structure is two storeys high.
On the side entrance elevation, there are two blank gable ends flanking a narrow depressed entrance bay. The entrance features a tripartite ensemble resembling a Venetian window, complete with a semi-circular fanlight, a panelled door, and narrow side windows, all framed with architrave. Above, there is a twelve-pane hornless sash window.
The garden front has a three-window range on the main block, with twelve-pane hornless sashes on the first floor and tall fifteen-pane sashes on the ground floor, except for one window that has been converted into French doors. The cross wing at the garden end is slightly advanced to the right and has tripartite hornless sash windows on each floor, arranged in a 4:8:4 pattern, along with a small four-light sash window in the attic. The building features axial stacks with brick shafts and overhanging eaves throughout, supported by console brackets.
