Description
Ferbeers is a detached cottage located on Halberton High Street, dating from the 17th century with later alterations. It features coursed rubble construction, partially plastered, beneath a thatched gabled roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, likely originally a two-room cottage with an added wing. It is two stories high.
The front of the cottage, facing the road, has one two-light window on the first floor of the main range and two windows below, one of which is a 20th-century replacement for a doorway. All windows have 20th-century leaded panes. There is a thatched porch supported by plain poles leading to the wing, which has a bay window with a configuration of one, two, and one light to the right, accompanied by a small two-light window. A heavy brick buttress is present on the right-hand gable end of the wing.
At the rear, there are 19th and 20th-century casement windows, with three on the first floor and two on the ground floor, along with a conservatory. The interior includes a fireplace in the wing that has been largely renewed but retains a side oven and evidence of a smoking chamber, along with a heavy chamfered beam featuring step stops. The roof is an intact late 17th-century structure, with trusses that are morticed, pegged, and crossed at the apex, complete with a collar.
