Description
Higher Shutehanger Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with later alterations and extensions. It is constructed from a mix of stone and cob, plastered, and features a gabled-end slate roof. Originally, the layout consisted of a three-room, through-passage plan, with the lower end located to the left of the passage. The parlour end has been largely rebuilt and enlarged in the late 20th century. The building is two storeys high and has a front with a four-window range, all of which are late 20th-century windows. There is also a wide, glazed late 20th-century porch under a tiled roof. The farmhouse has external stacks, with the left stack being external and an axial stack that backs onto the former passage, both featuring plastered brick shafts.
Inside, the lower end room contains a chamfered axial beam with hollow step stops and a lower end fireplace with a side oven. The hall features a cross beam that is also chamfered with hollow step stops, and a bressumer between the hall and parlour retains mortices for screen studs and a pointed, chamfered door arch. The roof consists of three jointed crucks, which are morticed and side-pegged at the apex, with collars that are similarly constructed. Early rafters and battening are preserved above the parlour, and the truss over the hall may show signs of having been lightly smoke-blackened. The first floor level was significantly higher above the hall than in the adjacent rooms, suggesting a possible insertion, though this has since been levelled.
