Description

Challis House is an early 19th-century house located in Sampford Peverell. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and features a slate roof. The house has a double depth plan and faces southeast onto the road. Inside, there is a central entrance hall and staircase, with a front and back room on either side. The rooms are heated by gable-end stacks.

The exterior is symmetrical with a three-window front centered around a doorway that features a four-panel door, an overlight, panelled reveals, and a doorcase with a moulded entablature. Above the door is a 12-pane sash window, while the outer bays have 16-pane sashes. The front plaster is lightly incised to resemble ashlar, and the house has plain deep eaves with a gable-ended roof. The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed to contain a significant amount of original joinery and other details.
