Description

Sandfords is a mid-19th century house located in Whimple. It is built of plastered stone rubble, possibly with brick, and features brick stacks with plastered chimney shafts, all under a slate roof. The house follows an L-shaped plan. The main block, facing south, originally had a two-room plan with a central entrance hall containing the main staircase. The left room has an end stack, the right room a rear lateral stack, and a projecting wing to the rear has its own end stack. The front elevation is symmetrical with three windows. It originally featured casement windows with an attractive margin-pane pattern of glazing bars. The central doorway is sheltered by an original timber flat-roofed porch, featuring a moulded entablature, square-section panelled posts, double doors, and a diamond-patterned glazed overlight. The interior was not inspected, but appears well-preserved with a good amount of original joinery. The windows are thought to be the work of a local workshop.
