Description
Brook Cottages are two cottages located in Whimple, dating from the late 17th century or 18th century. They are built of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks that are topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and feature a thatched roof. The cottages face west onto The Square. The northern cottage has a single-room plan with a rear lateral stack, while the southern cottage has a two-room plan with an axial stack situated between the rooms. The buildings are two storeys high and have 20th-century service extensions at the rear. The front exterior displays an irregular arrangement of five windows, featuring 18th, 19th, and 20th-century casements with glazing bars, and the first-floor windows have thatch eyebrows above them. The two front doors are made of 20th-century planks. The roof is half-hipped at both ends. Although the interior was not accessible for inspection during the survey, it is noted that original carpentry details are said to survive. Brook Cottages are part of a group of listed buildings near the Church of St Mary.
