Description
The churchyard walls and south gate of the Church of St Mary were likely built around 1845, coinciding with the church's reconstruction, although some parts may be older. The walls are made of snecked volcanic stone topped with ashlar coping. The churchyard is elevated as a terrace above The Square, and the walls support this terrace. At the south-east corner, the wall curves to follow the road as it transitions from the south side to the east side. The south gate, located at the bottom of a flight of granite steps, features square-section piers made of lightly rusticated ashlar, topped with granite pyramid caps. The gate itself is probably from the late 19th century and is adorned with richly ornamented wrought iron scrollwork.
