Description
The Whimple War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is prominently located within the churchyard to the south of the Church of St Mary, which is listed as Grade II*. The memorial is made of granite and features a Latin cross atop a tall octagonal shaft, which stands on a three-stepped octagonal base.
The upper section of the base has an inscription in lead lettering that reads "IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN 1914 1919" on seven of its eight sides, while a small cross is carved on the eighth face. The middle step lists the names of the fallen, and the lower section bears the inscription "1939 – 1945 / (NAMES)."
