Description
The Blundeston War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is prominently located at the eastern end of the churchyard, near the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial stands 5 meters high and features a plain stone Latin cross on top of a tall, gently tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft is set on a substantial square plinth with chamfered corners, which is mounted on a large three-stepped square stone base.
On the southern face of the plinth, there is a bronze plaque that reads: "IN PROUD AND GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919/ THESE NOBLY PLAYED THEIR PARTS/ THESE HEARD THE CALL/ FOR GOD AND KING AND HOME/ THEY GAVE THEIR ALL."
The north face features another bronze plaque that states: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," listing 30 names in two columns. On the west face, a later plaque commemorates the Second World War with the inscription: "1939 – 1945," which includes six names in two columns.
